Travel through time to the golden age of Cadiz on this walking tour of its Old Town. Discover how it became the trading gateway to the Indies in the 18th century.
Cadiz Old Town Walking Tour Itinerary
In the 18th century, the Spanish government transferred their main port for trade with the Americas from Seville to Cadiz, and the coastal town consequently became one of the country's greatest and most cosmopolitan cities. After meeting in Plaza de San Juan de Dios in the heart of the Old Town, you'll begin your walking tour through the streets built during this golden age that were home to international traders.
Delve deep into the historic El Pópulo quarter, reaching Casa del Almirante, the palatial Admiral's House, where you'll learn all about the daily lives of the communities who traded with the Americas. Continue your route on to Plaza de las Flores, a lively square famous for its flower stalls, and the town's large food market.
The next stop along your tour will be Torre Tavira, one of 160 towers that dotted the Cadiz skyline in the 18th century for locals to watch out for merchant ships arriving from the Americas. Today, it remains the tallest point in Cadiz' Old Town, and is the perfect spot to enjoy magnificent panoramic views over the beautiful town and its coast. You'll also get to see an interesting projection of the area thanks to the camera obscura located at the top of the tower.
Make your way to Plaza San Antonio, a square lined with elegant buildings which became the centre of the town's urban expansion in the 17th century. You'll then visit Plaza de Mina to admire the architecture of the 18th century buildings, once home to the city's bourgeoisie, which now house parts of the Museum of Cadiz.
Your tour will come to an end after approximately two hours exploring the Cadiz of the merchants' gateway to the Americas.
To enjoy the views from Tavira Tower, you will have to be capable of climbing 173 steps.
