Prado Museums Free Tour
Montevideo is a city steeped in cultural heritage and the best example of this is in the numerous museums found around the Prado district, all of which are free to enter. Our walking tour of this neighborhood begins in front of the Juan Manuel Blanes Museum of Arts. We will visit this marvelous venue at the end of the tour, but first, we head to the Mendilaharsu villa, historically a stately home for a noble family of the same name but where today you will find the National Museum of Anthropology. Besides the museum's fascinating exhibits, you will also encounter the villa's interior patio with a beautiful fountain as its centerpiece.
Our walking tour then continues to the Museo de la Memoria (Museum of Memory), where you have 15 minutes of your own free time to browse the permanent collection of this small center dedicated to remembering and honoring the victims of the Uruguayan dictatorship of 1973 to 1985. This museum building was also the residence of former president and dictator Maximo Santos.
Our guide will lead you past the spectacular Prado Chico park and through some of the most charming streets in the area before we finally arrive back at the original starting point: the Quinta García de Zuñiga, home to the Blanes Museum of Fine Arts. We will enter the venue to view its fantastic collection of Uruguayan artworks from throughout the country's history. The icing on the cake of this visit is the stunning Japenese Garden which you will discover behind the museum.
