Immerse yourself in the history of 18th century Cadiz on this guided tour, discovering the most iconic monuments from its golden age: the Cathedral and the Tavira Tower.
Cadiz Cathedral & Tavira Tower Guided Tour Itinerary
Meet your guide in Plaza de San Juan de Dios, a beautiful square in the historic centre of Cadiz, ready to begin your guided tour of two of the most emblematic monuments of the city's golden age.
After a brief stroll through the picturesque Old Town and wandering under the Arco de la Rosa, an archway that was a gate in the Medieval city walls, you'll reach the Cadiz Cathedral. Local gaditanos call it the "New Cathedral", as it was built when the existing 16th century church became too small for the growing population. Its fusion of architectural styles - from Baroque to Rococo to Neoclassical - reflects the fact that it took 116 years to build.
You'll then visit the Cathedral Museum, which is located in the cavea, or seating area, of the ancient Roman Theatre of Cadiz. Here you'll see historic religious objects and exquisite ornaments from the Cathedral, as well as paintings and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Next, you'll head to the Torre Tavira, the tallest tower in Cadiz' Old Town. After admiring its Baroque architecture from outside, you'll climb up to its terrace to enjoy incomparable views over the city and the bay. As you take in the vistas, think back to the 18th century, when this - and 160 other towers across Cadiz - were used by local merchants to watch for trading ships arriving from the Americas.
Tavira Tower is also home to a camera oscura, which you'll have the opportunity to use to see a live, moving projection of what's happening outside, using the periscope. The impressive optical illusion makes far-off objects seem much closer than they really are!
Your guided tour will end after two hours.
To enjoy the views from Tavira Tower, you will have to be capable of climbing 173 steps.
