Free Tour of the Bosque de Chapultepec
The bosque de Chapultepec is one of the most unusual green spaces in Mexico City. Get to know its secret history with this free tour, and even better it's free!
Free Tour of the Bosque de Chapultepec
The tour meets at 11 am on Paseo de la Reforma avenue, and from there, we will walk the short distance to the Chapultepec forest. Ready for a free tour of one of the most important green spaces in Mexico City?!
We'll explore this oasis, until we reach the area where a series of skirmishes took place in 1847, to the backdrop of the tension of the Mexican-American War. Then, it's on to the Chapultepec Castle, a neoclassical and baroque palace that served as a 'country home' the viceroys of New Spain.
The tour continues, investigating the various tree species in the area - including cedars, poplars, palm trees and sycamores. Then, it's on to the park's Botanical Garden, where we will find orchids, ornaments and cacti!
Did you know that rites for the water god Tláloc were held nearby? We will talk about these ceremonies in front of the National Museum of Anthropology, located within the forest itself, and with an impressive monolith at its entrance!
Next, we will pass by a 16th-century pool, and one of the healing pools where Moctezuma was believed to bathe. We will also stop in front of the cave whose entrance is guarded by an ancient ahuehuete tree known as "the Sargeant". The Nahuatl legends say that this is the entrance to the underworld itself...
Then, after two hours touring the Chapultepec forest, we will end the experience.
