Coyoacán is the most bohemian neighbourhood in Mexico City, which was home to great artists such as Frida Kahlo. Get to know its history with this free tour.
Free Walking Tour of Coyoacán
The tour meets at 2:20 pm by the Quisco Coyoacán in Plaza Hidalgo garden, ready to explore Coyoacán's main attractions!
We will walk through the cobbled streets of the contemporary neighborhood and admire the pre-Hispanic remains and colonial buildings, discovering its role as a hub of cultural and intellectual influence. Frida Kalho was born here and a wealth of famous figures have passed through Coyoacán, such as Buñuel, Trotsky and Jesusa Rodríguez.
Throughout the route we will visit the church of San Juan Bautista, one of the first built after the conquest of Hernán Cortés. There we will learn about the story of the local culture that emerged after the Spanish invasion. Then we will stop at Casa Alvarado, an 18th-century building incorporating Andalusian and Moorish elements. The writer Octavio Paz, one of the most influential Spanish language writers of the 20th century, spent his last days in this house.
Then we'll visit the craft stalls full of necklaces, traditional indigenous toys and colourful alebrijes (fantasy sculptures typical to the region). This is the perfect place to grab a souvenir to take home!
We will put an end to the tour at around 4:35 pm back at the starting point.
